How do I let students make up or retake tests?
Learn to let students work on a quiz or exam that's past-due or otherwise already submitted.
There are a few options for allowing students to work on a quiz or exam again:
- You want the student to start from scratch
- You want the student to continue from where they left off
- You want to keep the student's work and give them a second try
You want the student to start from scratch
- Open the test in Derivita
- In the top right, click Students to see the list of students
- Find the student and click the 3 dots to the right of their name
- Choose Grant Retake
You want the student to continue from where they left off
- If the due date has passed, start by extending it. You can learn how below:

In some cases, you can give a student another attempt at the whole test by making a duplicate.
This option isn't available for shared assessments, so if it's a district benchmark or PLC assessment, please see You want the student to start from scratch.
To duplicate an assignment, you'll:
- Start adding an assignment
- Use "My Courses" to quickly select the same questions
- Add a new due date and set the assignment settings.
You'll end up with two assignments in your LMS, each with their own grade. You can then use the LMS to put them into an assignment group and drop the lower grade. If you use Canvas, you can learn how to do that here:
