How Are Student Outcomes Determined in Assignment Reports?
A guide to interpreting outcome labels and what they mean for student learning.
When reviewing your reports, you’ll see an Outcome Label (such as Mastery, Near Mastery, or Emerging) assigned to each student for every standard on an assignment. This article explains how those outcomes are determined.
Step 1: Student Score on a Standard
For each assignment, Derivita looks at the questions that are **tagged to a specific standard**.
A student’s score for that standard is based on the points earned out of the total points possible across those tagged questions.
Example:
If four questions are tagged to a standard and a student earns 7 out of 10 possible points, their score for that standard is **70% (0.70)**.
---
Step 2: Mapping the Score to an Outcome
That score is then mapped into a performance band.
Default outcome thresholds are:
| Score Range | Outcome Label |
| --------------- | ------------- |
| **0.90 – 1.00** | Mastery |
| **0.80 – 0.89** | Near Mastery |
| **0.00 – 0.79** | Emerging |
💡 Note: Districts can configure these thresholds to align with their grading practices or state expectations. If your district has customized settings, outcomes may look different from the defaults above.
---
Step 3: Assigning the Outcome Label
Once mapped, the score is displayed in reports as an Assignment Standards Analysis.
Examples:
* A score of **0.92** → **Mastery**
* A score of **0.85** → **Near Mastery**
* A score of **0.72** → **Emerging**
* A score of **0.40** → **Emerging**
---
Why outcomes may differ across districts
Each district can customize the performance ranges.
This ensures outcomes align with local grading policies and state expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if no questions are tagged to a standard?
A: No outcome will be calculated for that standard.
Q: Why do two students with the same score sometimes get different outcomes?
A: Outcomes depend on your district’s thresholds. Customized settings may differ from the defaults.
Q: What if I see an unexpected outcome?
A: First, check that the assignment’s questions are tagged correctly. If they are, the difference is likely due to district-specific thresholds.

Summary
* Outcomes are based on performance on questions tied to standards.
* Default thresholds are:
* Mastery = 90% and above
* Near Mastery = 80–89%
* Emerging = 50–79% or below 50%
* **Districts can configure their own thresholds**, so outcomes may vary.
