What do Mastery, Near Mastery, and Emerging mean in Derivita Analytics?

Across Derivita Analytics, a student's work on each standard rolls up to a single outcome label — Mastery, Near Mastery, or Emerging. It's the color you see on every standards table, distribution bar, and assignment report. Here's how a score becomes a label, and what each one means.

How a standard score is calculated

For each standard, Derivita looks at the questions tagged to it and divides points earned by total points possible across those questions. The result is a percentage from 0 to 100.

Example: a student answers four questions tagged to a standard and earns 7 of 10 possible points → a standard score of 70%.

That score then maps to an outcome label.

The outcome labels (default ranges)

By default, Derivita uses these bands:

Outcome	Standard score	What it means
🟢 Mastery	90% and up	Consistently demonstrates the standard
🟡 Near Mastery	80% to under 90%	Nearly there — a little more practice
🔴 Emerging	below 80%	Still developing — a reteach candidate
⚪ Not Yet Evaluated	no scored questions yet	Nothing tagged to this standard has been assessed

So the 70% score in the example above lands in Emerging.

What your district can configure

The bands above are the defaults. A district can tailor the whole outcome model to match its grading practices, MTSS tiers, or state expectations — specifically:

The cutoff scores — where each band begins (for example, setting Mastery at 85 instead of 90).
The number of tiers — three bands, four, or more.
The label names — the tiers can be renamed entirely. Some districts use MTSS-style labels like Meeting / Approaching / Strategic / Intensive in place of Mastery / Near Mastery / Emerging.
The colors — the color assigned to each tier, so the bands match your district's own conventions.

So the cutoffs, tier count, labels, and colors a given score earns can differ from the defaults shown here. The legend on each report always reflects your district's active configuration — when in doubt, read the ranges printed there.
