How to Add Derivita to Canvas with LTI 1.3

Canvas admins can make Derivita available to teachers and students by following these steps.

Part 0: Rename existing LTI 1.1 installations

If you've previously installed Derivita with LTI 1.1, make those installations easy to distinguish from what we're about to add by renaming them.

For each place (account or course) on which Derivita is installed with LTI 1.1:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > View App Configurations
  2. Next to Derivita, click the gear icon and choose Edit
  3. Change the name to Derivita (LTI 1.1)
  4. Click Submit

Keep these pages open, because you'll be removing the old installations in Part 3.

Part 1: Register a developer key for Derivita

  1. In Canvas, go to Admin > Developer Keys
  2. Click +Developer Key and choose LTI Key
  3. Fill it out like so:

Key Settings

Configure

 4.   Click Save

 5.   Back on the list of keys, click the toggle under State to enable the key

 6.   Copy the number under Details. This is the Client ID

Part 2: Install & Configure Derivita

Complete the following steps for each place (account or course) where you want to add Derivita:

Install the app

  1. In the account or course, go to Settings > Apps > View App Configurations
  2. Click +App
  3. Change Configuration Type to By Client ID
  4. Paste the Client ID (the number that you copied in Part 1)
  5. Click Submit, then Install

Configure the app

  1. Next to + Derivita, click the gear icon and choose Configure
  2. Paste the configure code that Derivita provided you

  3. Click Submit

When you see the success message, the installation is all set!

Part 3: Remove previous Derivita installations

If you'd previously installed Derivita with LTI 1.1, please remove those configurations, to make sure your courses are using Derivita's latest features.

⚠ Heads up!

While we highly recommend removing old installations of Derivita, please do so only between terms.

When you remove an installation, Derivita won't be able to send a student's grade to Canvas until they re-open the assignment, so if you do it while class is in session, some grades will be delayed or missing.

To remove LTI 1.1 installations, go to each place (account or course) with Derivita installed and:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > View App Configurations
  2. Next to Derivita (LTI 1.1), click the gear icon and choose Delete

Part 4: Add to your allowlist

Now that Derivita’s been added to Canvas, let’s make sure that students and teachers can access everything they'll need.
